Pickering Square: Movies under the starlight

Stars under the stars. Could summer nights in Bangor get any better than this?

One of Bangor’s cheap thrills, River City Cinema Society’s summer outdoor movie series, has been drawing folks to downtown’s Pickering Square at sundown on six consecutive Friday nights, spanning the summer vacation months of June, July and August.

Admission is free. All you need to bring is a folding chair and some spare change for the $1 popcorn and drinks.

The movies are shown using the group’s Cinema to Go portable digital theater equipment acquired in 2003 through a grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation.

The equipment includes a collapsible 15-by-11-foot screen that folds down small enough to fit inside a tote about the size of a hockey gear bag.

Rain? No problem. The movies merely move into the nearby Bangor Opera House near the corner of Main and Union streets.

The summer outdoor film series debuted in 2004 when River City Cinema presented a series titled “Noir Beneath the Stars,” followed by “Smiles on a Summer Night” in 2005, and then last year’s “If It’s Friday, This Must be Bangor.”

This year’s theme is “All in the Family.” So far, outdoor moviegoers have been treated to “The Little Foxes,” “Shadow of a Doubt” and “White Heat.”

Tonight’s feature is “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane,” a cult classic starring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford.

Remaining flicks in the 2007 movie series are:

. July 27: “Paper Moon”

. Aug. 3: “The In-Laws”

If you go…

Bring a folding chair. Movies start at sundown in Pickering Square (near parking garage) about 8:30 p.m.
