INDIAN ISLAND – Police Chief Bob Bryant said the Penobscot Nation’s Walk for a Safe and Healthy Community was a success Friday.
About 200 people of all ages participated in the event, which was geared to promote healthful lifestyles. It was also part of the tribal Police Department’s effort to be more active in the community.
“With the threat of rain looming over it, it was very successful,” Bryant said.
Tribal Chief Kirk Francis gave the opening remarks, and Bryant said he touched on the importance of community involvement and agencies working together.
“That’s one of the premises I’m working on as a police chief,” Bryant said. “That’s one of the reasons that I spearheaded this program and worked with the other tribal agencies.”
Before the walk, which was followed by a barbecue, walking trail tours, and tree planting, Bryant worked with children at the Boys & Girls Club to make posters about promoting healthy lifestyles, such as anti-drug abuse.
This was the first event of its kind on the island, but Bryant said it’s something he hopes to make an annual event and possibly adding to the tribe’s community days.
