Old Town-Glenburn wins state title

OLD TOWN – Sam Besse hit two doubles and two singles and knocked in three runs to help lead the Old Town-Glenburn All-Stars past Portland North 7-0 to win the Senior League Softball State Championship Sunday.

It is the fourth time since 2000 that Old Town-Glenburn has won the championship. The stars will advance to the 12-team Eastern Regional at Worcester, Mass., on Saturday.

Portland North defeated Sanford 5-1 in Sunday’s first game. Sanford beat Portland North 6-5 in the first game on Saturday and Old Town-Glenburn beat Sanford in Saturday’s second game.

In the championship game, Besse and Jillian French combined to allow four hits and no walks while striking out 10 to earn the shutout win for Old Town-Glenburn.

Hannah Morin had a double and two singles with two RBIs for Old Town-Glenburn and Whitney Leland had a triple and three singles.

Heather Muzzy, Jesse Martin, Maggie Kilbride and Nicole James singled for Portland North.

In Saturday’s first game, Kelsy Doiron hit a three-run triple in the sixth inning for Sanford and Alix Burbank added an RBI single.

Jesse Martin led Portland North with a single and three RBIs.

In Saturday’s second game, Besse and Jillian French combined for no runs, one hit, no walks and seven strikeouts for Old Town Sanford. Whitney Leland had two singles and a double with an RBI. Hannah Morin and Sheree Rice each singled and scored a run.

Lindsey Nolette singled in the second inning for Sanford.

In Sunday’s first game, Jesse Martin doubled and singled to drive in a run to lead Portland North.

Lindsey Nolette paced Sanford with two singles and a run scored and Emily Downing singled twice.

At Calais, three pitchers combined on a no-hitter and Calais pounded out 28 hits for the win.

Olivia Smith, Mallorie Black and Jasmine Ross combined to strike out seven and walk three. Ross hit for the cycle with a single, two doubles, a triple and a home run. Madison McVicar added a triple, two doubles and a single, while Kaitlyn Cundiff hit four singles. Taylorae Carter singled three times.

At Ellsworth, Alex Braley, Corey Smelly and Evan Toothaker each had two singles and two RBIs to lead Ellsworth I to victory over Coastal Saturday.

Anthony Gardner tripled and drove in a run for Ellsworth I and Conor Maguire pitched 4 2/3 allowing one run on two hits, one walk and two hit batters while striking out eight.

Joey Pal led Coastal with an RBI triple in the third inning and Curtis Farren singled.

At Machias, Gage Feeney doubled and singled to drive in a run and also recorded nine strikeouts to lead Machias past Ellsworth Sunday.

Jordan Drouin hit an RBI single for Machias.

Carl Linscott led Ellsworth with an RBI single.

Brewer in title game

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, Matt Helfen hit a three-run triple to cap a 10-run sixth inning to lead Brewer past Hampden Sunday 13-1 in six innings. Bangor also defeated Old Town 4-3.

Bangor beat Holbrook 14-0 in Saturday’s first game and Old Town defeated Katahdin Valley 6-5 in seven innings in the second game Saturday.

Brewer will play the winner of Monday’s Hampden-Bangor game in the championship game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

In Saturday’s first game, Kyle Savage and Zane Gray combined to pitch a two-hit shutout for Bangor.

Jordan Clarke had a double and three singles for Bangor and John Cox added a double and two singles with three RBIs. Mack Susi doubled and singled to drive in a run and Ryan LaRochelle doubled and singled with three RBIs.

Chris Potter and Justin Corey singled for Holbrook.

In Saturday’s second game, Tyler Cates scored the winning run in the seventh inning on an error to lead Old Town past Katahdin Valley.

Dan LeBreton had two singles and two RBIs for Old Town and Cates doubled.

Andy Kay hit a lead-off double in the seventh and scored the tying run on a Michael Carey double.

In Sunday’s first game, Eric White had a triple, double and two singles with two RBIs for Brewer, Matt Helfen added two doubles and three RBIs.

Ryan Blake, Matthew Lindemann and Jeremy Leong singled for Hampden.

In Sunday’s second game, Jordan Clarke singled and later scored the winning run in the fifth inning to lead Bangor past Old Town.

Cody McInnis had two singles and an RBI for Bangor. Lonnie Hackett hit an RBI double and Clarke singled twice.

Zach Mansell had two singles and an RBI to lead Old Town and Dan LeBreton doubled.

State tourney, Junior League

South Portland, Lewiston win

At Bucksport, South Portland scored six runs in the seventh inning capped by a Jack Bushey RBI single to lead South Portland to the 7-6 win over Bangor in the opening game of the Junior League State Tournament Saturday.

Elliot Avenue of Lewiston blanked Sacopee Valley 18-0 in the second game.

In the first game, Jacob Dekubber and Evan Indorf each singled twice for South Portland, the District Six champion. Nic Lops added an RBI double.

Adam King and John Kelley both hit two-run doubles for District 3 Champion Bangor. Joe Stanoicz singled twice.

In the second game, Joe Sullivan, Alex Parker, Mekae Hyde, Scott Ouellette and Corbin Hyde combined to pitch a no hitter for District Five Champion Elliot Avenue. They had five strikeouts and five walks.

Mekae Hyde led Elliot Avenue with a home run and a triple with five RBIs.

Jacob Mudgette walked three times for Sacopee Valley.
