Bangor driver charged twice with OUI within two hours

BANGOR – A local man was charged twice for operating under the influence on Sunday morning, the arrests separated by less than two hours.

At 1:34 a.m., Matthew Kelley, 19, of Bangor had parked his black Saab to face oncoming traffic between the Interstate 95 southbound ramp and overpass on Hammond Street, according to Bangor police.

When Officer Wade Betters asked Kelley what he was doing, he replied that he was trying to pick up his girlfriend, who was hanging out with another guy to make him angry, according to reports.

Betters noted that two females and a male were walking on the other side of the road. When asked, one of the females told Betters she was not going to ride with Kelley.

After a field sobriety test, Kelley was taken to the police station and registered a .20 percent blood alcohol content, according to reports. His Saab was towed.

Kelley was arrested for OUI, summoned for operating without a license, released on bail and warned by Betters not to drive, according to reports.

By 3:07 the same morning, Kelley had crashed a blue Ford Explorer into the side of Bangor Floral at 96 Center St., according to the police report. Kelley allegedly fled the scene.

Officer Brandon Vafiades was driving down Harlow Street toward Kenduskeag Avenue when he saw Kelley run out of the bushes onto Harlow Street and stopped him.

Kelley told Vafiades, “I know about the accident, I cleaned that all up,” according to the police report. Kelley told the officer he had lost the brakes in the truck before hitting Bangor Floral. Police reported $2,000 in damage to the building.

Kelley again was arrested for OUI and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center for a blood test.

He also was summoned for leaving the scene of a property damage accident, according to police. He then was taken to the Penobscot County Jail, and since has been released. His initial court date was set for Aug. 23.
