CAMDEN – A memorial service will be held Friday for 18-year-old Gabrielle V. Meerbergen who was killed Sunday in a traffic accident in upstate New York.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department reported that Meerbergen was killed in Nelson, N.Y., when her car was hit broadside by a sport utility vehicle. The accident occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m. Sunday when Meerbergen failed to stop for a stop sign.
Camden resident Meerbergen was traveling south on Pleasant Valley Road when she entered Route 20 directly into the path of the westbound SUV. Meerbergen’s vehicle was hit on the driver’s side and the impact caused both vehicles to cross a grassy median and end up in the eastbound lanes of Route 20. The SUV flipped over at least twice and came to rest on the driver’s side. Meerbergen’s vehicle remained on its wheels and had traveled a distance of 220 feet before coming to a stop.
The SUV was operated by Peter M. Rocchi, 41, of Pine City, N.Y. Rocchi’s wife, Mary K. Rocchi, 42, was the front seat passenger and their son Christopher, 7, was belted in a child restraint seat. The child’s seat ended up in two pieces due to the impact, but the boy remained in place due to the seat belt.
Hydraulic cutting devices were needed to remove Meerbergen and the Rocchis from their vehicles. Mary Rocchi suffered serious leg and shoulder injuries and was airlifted from the scene to the hospital. Peter Rocchi and his son both suffered head injuries and were transported by ambulance to the hospital. None of the family’s injuries was life-threatening. Meerbergen died at the scene.
According to the department Meerbergen was visiting friends in the area and was traveling alone at the time of the accident.
Meerbergen is the daughter of Peter Meerbergen of Nantucket, Mass., and Dorothy “Misty” VanKennen and her companion, James Heard, of Camden.
The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 27, at the Camden Opera House.
