Old Town Police Capt. Kyle Smart said he wouldn’t classify Saturday night’s incident as a chase, but said it did take officers from three departments to stop and arrest an intoxicated Glenburn man.

Old Town police Officer Brian Doyle was running radar on College Avenue about 9:30 p.m. when a green Toyota sped by him going 41 mph in a 25 mph zone, according to Smart. Doyle followed the vehicle, but the driver refused to stop even after Doyle put on his emergency lights.

The car at one point pulled into the University of Maine’s Alfond Arena parking lot where Doyle said it became airborne as the driver went over a landscape island, narrowly missing a tree.

Eventually the car turned into the Jenness Hall parking lot where the driver stopped, got out, and ran toward Shibles Hall, according to Doyle’s report.

By this time, Orono police and University of Maine Public Safety officers were on hand to assist, and Orono Officer Seth Burnes took William Whalen, 38, of Glenburn into custody.

Whalen was visibly intoxicated and uncooperative, according to police reports.

He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and charged with refusing to submit to arrest, operating after his license was revoked for being a habitual offender, operating under the influence, failure to stop for a police officer and speeding.
