Henry gains top Zone 1 honor Gray named Coach of the Year

Collin Henry of Trenton and Tyler Miles of Waldo took top individual honors Tuesday evening as the American Legion Zone 1 baseball coaches selected their 2007 all-star teams.

Henry was named Zone 1 Player of the Year after a spectacular effort both on the mound and at the plate for the Acadians, who will be the top seed in the zone tournament that gets under way Friday at Husson College in Bangor.

A 2006 George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill graduate who last spring was a key member of the University of Southern Maine baseball team, the lefthander compiled a 5-0 pitching record with one save and a 1.26 ERA this summer while batting .464 with six home runs, 28 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

Henry, who earned pitcher of the year honors last summer, gained All-Zone 1 recognition for the fourth straight year.

Miles was named Zone 1 Pitcher of the Year after compiling a 4-1 record with one save and a 1.16 ERA for the Wildcats. The lefthander, who will be a senior at Mount View High School of Thorndike in the fall, struck out 45 and walked just five in 38 innings and threw a no-hitter and two shutouts in helping 15-5 Waldo finish third in the final regular-season standings.

Bill Gray of Trenton was named coach of the year after guiding the Acadians to an 18-2 record and the regular-season championship.

Zone runner-up Bangor (17-3) led all teams with five first-team honorees. Neal Russell was one of four pitchers on the first team after compiling a 6-0 record with one save and an 0.84 ERA in 33 1/3 innings. Other Comrades on the first team are third baseman Shane Walton (.333, 24 runs, 15 SB and errorless defense), shortstop Ian Edwards (.367, 19 RBI, 10 extra-base hits), outfielder Tom Crews (.427, 3 HR, 22 RBI) and designated hitter Gordon Webb (.435, 19 RBI, 11 extra-base hits).

Presque Isle, fifth in the zone with a 12-8 record, has four first-team choices in pitcher Andrew York (3-2, 2.40 ERA), second baseman Mike Cleary (.469, 30 hits, 22 RBI, three home runs, 13 extra-base hits), outfielder Hunter Caron (.408, 36 runs, three home runs 23 RBIs), and DH Tom Desjardins (.481, four home runs, 15 RBIs).

Third-place Waldo is represented by Miles and catcher Noah Burke (.422, five home runs, 15 RBI, 12 stolen bases) while fourth-place Brewer (12-8) has a pair of first-teamers in pitcher Greg Higgins (5-1, 2.48 ERA) and utility player Chris Maguire (.323, three home runs, 18 RBI, 3-1 pitching). Penquis, the sixth and final tournament qualifier, is represented on the first team by pitcher Scott Kelley (4-0, 2.01 ERA, three complete games).

Rounding out the first team are first baseman Aaron Flannery of Lincoln (.414, 3 HR, 25 RBI) and outfielders Shawn Smith of Hampden (.486, 35 hits, 24 SB) and Corey Fournier of Orono (.429, .571 on-base percentage).
