Hot potatoes

Love spuds? Then enter your favorite recipe in Northern Maine Fair’s “Potatoes for the Health of It” potato cookoff in Presque Isle. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Maine Potato Board will judge entries in six categories: breads, soups, salads, casseroles, desserts and miscellaneous. To enter, bring your prepared dish and neatly typed or printed recipe to the fairgrounds between noon and 1 p.m. Saturday. Judging will begin promptly at 1 p.m. Recipes must feature Maine potatoes, be low in sodium and fat, and use ingredients that are readily available. All Aroostook County residents are eligible, and a $100 best of show prize will be awarded, as will cash prizes for first- second- and third-place cooks. For information or a complete copy of the rules, call (800) 287-1421.

Triple play

Things are looking berry, berry, berry nice at the Brooklin Inn, and Chip Angell couldn’t be happier. “It is unusual to have all three berries ripe for serving,” he writes. “We are doing a three Berry Napoleon, a Three Berry Tart and a Three Berry Bread Pudding! If the strawberries hold – but they are fading fast – we could have four berries as the blackberries are a week or two away.” The tartlet features strawberries, raspberries and blueberries arranged on a custard shell, while the Napoleon features the berr trio layered with pastry cookies and whipped cream. The bread pudding is baked with blueberries, topped with a blueberry compote and sliced strawberries and garnished with raspberries and maple syrup collected from trees on the Inn’s property. For information or to reserve a seat for dinner – or dessert – call 359-2777.

Pizza plus

Tidbits reader Christina Earley of Winterport recently wrote in singing the praises of Winterport Pizza, where owner Desiree Wilson Ayer has taken the issue of sustainability to heart. The restaurant uses no preservatives, hydrogenated oils or trans fats in its pizza dough, sources most of its produce from local, organic growers, and uses GreenWave packaging, which is 100 percent biodegradable. In addition to pizza, Winterport Pizza also offers pasta dishes and Mexican meals. For information, call 223-4902.
