BANGOR – Ames A/E, Architects and Engineers, will sponsor an after-hours event featuring the art of Paul Thibodeau, wine, light refreshments and conversation about sustainable architecture.

“Art and Architecture: Reflecting Maine’s Sense of Place,” will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, on the second floor at AMES A/E offices, 115 Main St.

“This event is an opportunity to showcase Maine artist Paul Thibodeau and his work that reflects Maine’s sense of place,” said Brian Ames, AMES A/E senior principal and building services manager. “At the same time, AMES A/E is committed to the same ideas through our architecture and we hope to present that.”

Thibodeau has been capturing the beauty of the Maine outdoors for more than 30 years. His works include original watercolors, acrylics, limited edition prints, note cards and photographs of the Maine coast, Downeast lighthouses, Mount Katahdin at Baxter State Park and historic buildings of the Bangor area, including railway stations and trains.

Corporate citizenship award

AUGUSTA – Jobs for Maine’s Graduates recognized Bangor Savings Bank as the recipient of the national Above and Beyond Corporate Citizenship Award on April 25. Jobs for Maine’s Graduates is one of 32 organizations nationwide affiliated with the Jobs for America’s Graduates network. The network will honor Bangor Savings Bank and present the award at its national conference in July in Orlando, Fla.

Jobs for Maine’s Graduates honored Bangor Savings Bank to cap off the organization’s 15th Career Development Conference in Augusta. Some 500 gradating high school seniors involved in the JMG program participated in the conference, which included career-related competitive events, workshops and a Career Expo.

Bangor Savings Bank has pledged $150,000 over three years to JMG and provided additional support through employees mentoring Jobs for Maine’s Graduates’ management team, attending student events, speaking in classrooms and participating as volunteer judges.

“Jobs for Maine’s Graduates represented an ideal opportunity for Bangor Savings Bank to get involved, because the work JMG does ultimately benefits every Maine individual and business,” said Yellow Breen, Bangor Savings Bank senior vice president and chief strategy officer. “JMG is preparing today’s Maine students to become future employees, business and civic leaders and citizens. We are proud of our role helping to further that mission.”

Jobs for Maine’s Graduates was established in 1993 by the Maine Legislature as a private, statewide nonprofit. JMG serves some 2,500 students in more than 50 school-based sites.

Flights to Orlando

BANGOR – Low-cost airline Allegiant Air LLC has announced new, nonstop jet service to Orlando, Fla., from Bangor beginning Nov. 7. The low-fare carrier will celebrate the new service to the Sunshine State with introductory fares as low as $89 each way when booked at www.allegiantair.com. Introductory fares are available for a limited time.

The self-proclaimed “Official Airline for Sunshine” will launch the new scheduled service from Bangor International Airport to Orlando Sanford International Airport with complete vacation packages.

Allegiant will utilize a 150-seat MD-80 series jet aircraft on the route. The airline said its market research and input from local community leaders indicate that northeast Maine and Atlantic Canada communities will welcome the nonstop flights to Orlando as an alternative to connecting flights and long drives to other airports.

The new flights will operate twice weekly, with service Wednesday and Saturday. Flights will depart BIA at noon, arriving in Orlando Sanford International Airport at 3:20 p.m. Flights leaving Orlando will depart at 8:15 a.m., arriving in Bangor at 11:25 a.m.

Leadership Institute

BANGOR – U.S. Cellular announced that Shane Leketa, retail wireless consultant in U.S. Cellular’s retail store in Bangor; Christine Doyle, retail wireless consultant in Bangor; and Melissa Borden, retail wireless consultant in Brewer have been chosen to participate in the Leadership Institute, U.S. Cellular’s leadership training program.

The associates will attend an eight-month program teaching leadership skills in competencies such as high impact communication and making effective decisions, providing them the tools to lead other associates. The graduates will continue their training and development through quarterly forums and mentorship.

Accredited animal hospital

BREWER – Brewer Veterinary Clinic has received accreditation again after a comprehensive evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association. The evaluation includes a quality assessment review of the hospital’s facility, medical equipment, practice methods and pet health care management.

Only 15 percent of all small animal veterinary practices in the United States have achieved accreditation by the association. To maintain accredited status, Brewer Veterinary Clinic must continue to be evaluated regularly by the association’s consultants.

The American Animal Hospital Association is an international organization of more than 36,000 veterinary care providers who treat companion animals. Established in 1933, the association is known among veterinarians for its high standards for hospital and health care.
