The University of Maine- Presque Isle has hired two head coaches for the upcoming school year.

Tammy Krul, a Caribou resident, will take over the Owls’ women’s soccer program while Mike Michaud has been named baseball coach.

Krul, who played for Caribou High School and Franklin Pierce (N.H.) College, brings more than 14 years of coaching and playing experience to the UMPI program.

After earning her bachelor’s degree from Franklin Pierce in 1997, Tammy and her husband, Robbie, have owned and operated the Dutch Soccer Academy. Last year, the program enrolled more than 1,500 students and hosted 15 coaches from all over the world.

Michaud, a graduate of UMPI, is also a Caribou resident and has been involved in athletics at the high school level since 2001, coaching both baseball and soccer at Caribou.

CMCC adding four sports

Central Maine Community College of Auburn is adding four varsity sports for the 2007-08 school year, including men’s soccer, men’s and women’s volleyball, and a coed golf team.

CMCC athletic director Dave Gonyea, who said these sports have been added in direct response to student demand, also anticipates adding women’s soccer and lacrosse “within a year or two.”

“We just completed construction of the new residence hall,” he said in a release. “We will have 250 students living here and the students want more services and opportunities.”

All the new programs except men’s volleyball will start this fall. The men’s volleyball team will begin its first season in the spring of 2008.

Colby hires Henning

Karen MacCrate Henning has been named the new head coach of Colby College’s women’s lacrosse team.

Henning was head coach for C.W. Post of Long Island University the last eight seasons. After starting the program in 1999, she won won NCAA Division II national titles in 2001 and 2007. Her career record at C.W. Post is 103-21.

Henning played attacker for the University of Maryland and won national titles with the unbeaten Terrapins in 1995 and 1996. She was an NCAA Division I first team All-American in 1995 and 1996. After graduation, she became an assistant coach at Dartmouth College and helped the Big Green win to Ivy League titles in two seasons.

UMF gets training from Krzal

The University of Maine-Farmington has hired Karin Krzal as its athletic trainer.

The Springfield College graduate earned her master’s degree in sport psychology at Purdue University and then worked as head athletic trainer for Burke Mountain Academy in East Burke, Vt.
