No. 1 Trenton, Bangor, Brewer open with wins Penquis, Presque Isle, Waldo face elimination

BANGOR – It was the left arm of Collin Henry and the body of Alex Gallant that helped their teams advance in the Zone I American Legion Tournament Friday at the Winkin Baseball Complex.

Henry, the Zone 1 Player of the Year, fired a three-hitter in the opener and No. 9 hitter Phineas Peake had a pair of singles, scored a run and drove in another as top seed Trenton topped sixth seed Penquis 4-1.

In the second game, second seed Bangor rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to beat No. 5 Presque Isle 8-6 as Gallant accidentally dislodged the ball from second baseman Mike Cleary when Cleary tried to tag him to start a double play.

Fourth-seeded Brewer edged No. 3 Waldo 4-3 in 10 innings in the nightcap.

Two runs scored and Bangor used a Tom Crews fielder’s choice and a Shane Walton single to deliver the go-ahead and insurance runs.

Penquis and Presque Isle play today at 1 p.m.; Trenton plays Waldo at 4 p.m. and Bangor faces Brewer at 7 p.m.

Henry, who was 3-3 with a 3.08 earned run average for the University of Southern Maine last spring, had a no-hitter for 6 1/3 innings and retired 17 in a row in one stretch in the scorching heat.

The run off him was unearned and he threw 80 strikes among his 113 pitches. He fanned seven and didn’t walk anybody.

“My fastball and curve were working and I threw a lot more change-ups than usual. That’s what I got a lot of ground balls on. I even mixed in a few sliders with two strikes to show them a different breaking ball. I kept them off balance all day,” said Henry, who improved to 6-0.

“He’s really tough. He’s the hardest thrower I’ve seen,” said Penquis catcher Brad Brown.

Righty Nick Emery pitched very well in defeat, allowing six hits, six walks (two intentional) and four runs in seven innings.

Trenton opened the scoring in the first when Blake Wessel belted a long double to left center and eventually scored on Henry’s groundout.

Peake blooped a single into shallow right in the third, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Nick Swanson’s sacrifice fly.

Collin Ciomei doubled and eventually scored on Lucas Marks’ sacrifice fly in the fifth and Sam Merrill hit a lead-off double in the sixth and scored on Peake’s sharp single to center.

“I’ve been hitting pretty good all year,” said Peake, a .320 hitter. “I had two strikes on me both times but I tried to put the ball in play and, luckily, things worked out.”

A error, an Andrew Richard double and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. Danny Kane’s fielder’s choice scored one run but a fly ball ended the rally.

In the nightcap, Bangor jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Presque Isle answered with five in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead on three infield singles, including Matt McGlinn’s RBI single, three wild pitches, one of which produced a run on a swinging third strike, Pat Thibodeau’s opposite-field two-run single and Cleary’s sacrifice fly.

Tyson Barron ignited Bangor’s four-run rally in the eighth with a one-out single.

Gordon Webb bounced a single to left and Gallant was hit by a pitch.

Ian Edwards then grounded to Cleary and Gallant hesitated momentarily.

“At first, I thought he was going to try to run me back [to first]. Then I thought he was going to throw to second so I ran real hard, he stuck his glove in front of me and it just happened,” said Gallant.

“If I threw it to the shortstop, he would have taken him out and we wouldn’t have gotten the double play. We needed the double play. Then I went for the tag and I lost it. He knocked it out,” said Cleary.

Crews bounced to third and when third baseman Joe Soucy threw to second, Gallant beat Cleary’s relay to the plate. After a walk, Walton ripped his single to center.

PI’s Andrew York pitched a strong complete game as just two runs were earned.

Neal Russell relieved Jimmy Cox and pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless, shutout baseball with three strikeouts to go to 7-0.

“I felt great out there,” said Russell who thought he had all of his pitches working well.

“He always beats us. He’s a heckuva’ pitcher,” said PI catcher Harry Austin.

Webb tripled, doubled and singled and drove in two runs for Bangor. Barron tripled and singled.

Austin had three singles for PI and Hunter Caron tripled and singled and drove in a run.

In the late game, Brewer’s Rick Adams scored the winning run from third base on a delayed steal with two outs in the 10th as Chris Maguire was caught in a rundown on an attempted steal of second.

Mike Kotredes had a double and a single for Brewer while Prentiss Swett singled twice.

Noah Burke led Waldo with a pair of singles.

Waldo tied the game in the ninth on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher. An overthrow to third base allowed pinch runner Ethan Jean to score from third with one out.
