Alumnae soccer game to benefit Thompson fund

Among the many pieces of information awaiting my return from vacation was one I suspected was left by colleague Pam Tweedie, since her name is an essential part of the announcement. I was right.

Pam was pleased to report that the first annual Bangor High School Girls Soccer Alumnae Game is planned for 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at BHS on Broadway, and that this inaugural undertaking will benefit the Danielle Marie Thompson Scholarship Fund.

The event was established in honor and memory of the late BHS girls’ soccer captain and four-year member of the squad, who graduated in 2003.

Tragically, Thompson died after a brief illness on Jan. 3, 2007, during her senior year at the University of New Hampshire in Durham.

Admission to the game is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the scholarship fund.

Pam told me the Thompson family is enthused about the fundraiser and looking forward to being part of it.

In addition to the game, concessions offering hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, sausage, drinks and baked goods will be available at 5:30 p.m., raffle prizes will be given away, and a silent auction will be conducted during the game.

Items up for auction include jewelry, a one-night hotel stay, an autographed Major League baseball, a tanning package, a one-year gym membership, 100 gallons of heating oil and gift certificates for area businesses.

However, one of the most important pieces of information I have to pass along to you is that any alumnae who want to participate in this inaugural fundraiser for the Thompson Scholarship are asked to register by Friday, Aug 3.

The per-player participant fee of $20 will benefit the scholarship fund and will include a T-shirt.

Alumnae can register by e-mailing Kristan Strout at strout@fas.harvard.edu, and checks can be made payable to Danielle Marie Thompson Scholarship Fund and mailed in care of Tweedie at 21 Fifteenth St., Bangor, 04401.

For more information about the event, you can also call Tweedie at 947-7245.

The next SummerKeys’ Mary Potterton Memorial Concert is 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Lubec Congregational Christian Church.

The featured performers are clarinetist Anna Maria Baeza, pianist Gregory Biss, guitarist Winslow Browning, cellist Biana Kovic, flutist Suzanne Gilchrest, pianist Bruce Potterton and violinists Sheng-Tsung Wang and Cindy Lin.

For information about taking the Eastport-Lubec Concert Boat, call 853-2500.

Lynn Curtis King has provided more information about happenings in Seal Harbor.

King e-mailed that the Seal Harbor Library is hosting its annual fair on the Village Green beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 4, in that lovely coastal community.

“This is always a fun event for the entire family,” she wrote of the fair that features “attic treasures, baked goods, local produce, hot dogs and lots of wonderful used books.”

King added that there will be a new event this year, a costumed dog show, with judging beginning at 11 a.m. and prizes awarded.

If you need more information about this summertime activity, call the Seal Harbor Library at 276-5306.

Connie England of Old Town wrote that Bucksport High School Class of 1957 is making plans for its 50th Class Reunion, which is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7, at the Bucksport Golf Club.

The committee is still trying to locate four of its classmates, England added.

The individuals who are among the missing are Nancy Chase, Peter Leighton, Donis Perkins and Glen Sutherland.

If anyone has information about how to locate these members of BHS ’57, you are asked to call Marge Nightengale at 469-2515 or Dianne Gray at 469-2319.

Reservations are required for anyone wishing to attend the Second Annual Roque Bluffs Poetry Festival beginning with a morning workshop led by Maine’s Poet Laureate Betsy Sholl from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Roque Bluffs Community Center.

Following the workshop, you are invited to enjoy the beach and trails of Roque Bluffs State Park or visit with fellow poets and poetry lovers, wrote Ruth Leubecker. A bean supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. at that site.

Sponsored by the Salt Coast Sages, the cost for the daylong event is $45, or $5 for the supper.

Reservations can be made by writing Salt Coast Sages, c/o Kelly Lombardi, 89 Johnson Cove Rd., Roque Bluffs, 04654.
