DOVER-FOXCROFT – A Guilford man who in May led police on a high-speed chase through Sangerville was sentenced Monday in 13th District Court to 15 months in prison.
Zane Harmon, 21, pleaded no contest to an array of charges including reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon – a motor vehicle, eluding a police officer, passing a roadblock, criminal operating under the influence of intoxicants, driving to endanger and leaving the scene of an accident.
Harmon was arrested on Friday, May 4, by Piscataquis County sheriff’s deputies near the Piscataquis Country Club in Sangerville.
A Parkman couple and their daughter escaped injury a short time earlier after Harmon struck their vehicle at about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Routes 23 and 15, deputies said. The family’s 2004 Chrysler Sebring was demolished, but no one was injured.
“The problem with Mr. Harmon is that he’s had a significant history of anti-social behavior,” District Attorney R. Christopher Almy said after the sentencing Monday. “In this case, he disregarded the safety of a lot of people on the road when he crashed into that vehicle. While police were chasing him, he was going between 90 and 100 mph. It was really dangerous and he deserved every single day he got.”
Although Harmon did not admit to committing the crimes, he was found guilty of the charges by District Court Judge Kevin Stitham and sentenced as if he had pleaded guilty.
Harmon also was ordered to pay fines totaling $1,275 and his driver’s license was suspended for 18 months, according to the Piscataquis County District Attorney’s Office.
The chase began when a deputy tried to stop Harmon for speeding.
