TRENTON – A Pennsylvania couple were injured Wednesday afternoon when the car in which they were riding crashed into a cottage on Route 3.

According to Sgt. Alden Bustard of the Maine State Police, Diane Kuehn, 65, of Center Valley, Pa., was headed north on Route 3 at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday when she fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe, drifted across Route 3 and off the west side of the road, rolled over and struck one of the cottages at Acadia Gateway motel.

There was no one in the cottage at the time of the accident, but the vehicle came to rest against the cottage, and Kuehn and her husband, Henry, 77, were trapped in the vehicle for about a half-hour. Emergency crews from the Trenton and Ellsworth fire departments worked to remove them from the vehicle.

The Kuehns received minor injuries in the accident, according to Bustard. They were taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth, where they were still being treated late Wednesday afternoon. There was no word on their conditions.

Because the Kuehns’ vehicle traveled off Route 3, emergency crews were able to keep traffic moving on the busy road.

Damage to the vehicle was extensive and it was considered a total loss, the officer said.
