Brown memorial scholarship golf tourney on tap

Fraternity brothers and friends of the late Thomas Hayes Brown, who was 39 when he died in March 2005 in Bar Harbor invite you to join them and take part in a golf tournament in Brown’s honor and memory, the Thomas H. Brown Memorial Scholarship Tourney.

According to information provided by my colleague Todd McLeod, Brown had many passions in life but was particularly passionate about golf and his college fraternity, Eta Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi at the University of Maine in Machias, of which Todd is an alumni member.

Brown worked in the media and at local golf courses, and he coached golf at Mount Desert Island High School and basketball and baseball at Conners-Emerson School in Bar Harbor.

The THB Memorial Scholarship Tourney begins with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Bar Harbor Golf Course in Trenton.

The advance entry fee, before Wednesday, Aug. 15, is $100 per golfer, or $350 for a four-person team.

Hole sponsorships are available and are $250, or $100 in addition to the foursome fee.

To register or receive more information, call Robert Tracy of Oakland, president of the Kappa Delta Phi Alumni Association, at 649-0402.

A percentage of the profits will benefit the Mount Desert Island High School golf team, and the remainder of the profits will benefit the THB Scholarship Fund.

Personal and corporate donations and sponsorships also are welcome.

If you cannot attend but would like to make a contribution to the scholarship, donations can be send to Tracy at 308 Willey Point Road., Oakland 04963.

Todd told me that the event offers a $5,000 cash prize for a hole-in-one, and “great raffle prizes, including a Lyman Deerstalker Muzzleloader .54- caliber rifle” as well as a silent auction for Boston Red Sox baseball and New England Patriots football tickets.

U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Rick Grenier is retiring from the military after 26 years and is inviting family, friends, and former classmates to celebrate the occasion at 6 tonight, at VFW Post 3381 at 64 Water St. in Old Town.

Grenier was a member of Old Town High School’s Class of 1981 and now lives in Wichita, Kan.

Joe Brooks hopes you attend the second annual Winterport Musical Festival, from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Community Park.

Admission is $5, and free for children under 12.

David Mallett headlines the festival that offers everything from jazz to country and rhythm and blues.

Brenda Hall of Mount Desert Island Hospital invites you to the MDI Hospital Organization’s annual meeting, 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at the Bar Harbor Club, West Street in Bar Harbor.

The keynote speaker is Maine Hospital Association president Steven Michaud.

The event begins with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, and entertainment by Hugh Bowden and John Gallagher. The program and presentations follow at 6 p.m.

Noting that “the Bar Harbor Club is such a beautiful location for any type of event,” Hall reported the hospital’s Volunteer of the Year and Employee of the Year awards will be presented during the meeting.

This year, MDI Hospital is celebrating 110 years of service to the area.

The meeting is open to the public, and no reservations are required.

Ruth Sumner White, secretary of the Over 50 Brewer High School Class Reunion, wrote that event is Friday, Aug. 17, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer.

Members of the Class of 1947 will be honored on the occasion of their 60th anniversary.

However, planners have been unable to locate the following members of that class, and would appreciate any information you can provide about Phyllis Arnold Adams, Maurice Alpert, Ruby Walsh Doughty, Robert Libby, Winifred Murray Martin, Evangeline Smith Mitchell, Joyce Peters Nesbitt and Pauline Jamieson Riley.

If you can help, call White at 942-9271; write her at 33 Elm St., Bangor 04401; or e-mail ruth513@yahoo.com.

White reports the purpose of this event “is to raise money for scholarships for deserving graduating students” of BHS, and that each year, more than 200 people “from all over the country” return “to renew old friendships.”

White also reminds readers that anyone who attended BHS is welcome to be part of this event, and that you “do not need to have graduated” from BHS, to enjoy this all-inclusive high school reunion for those who were BHS students more than 50 years ago.
