LEEDS – A 12-year-old boy was fatally injured when the ATV he was riding with a family member flipped over and he was pinned beneath the machine, authorities said Saturday.

Alcohol was believed to have been a factor in the crash that took the life of Dillan Shink of Wilton, who was pronounced dead Friday night at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, the Maine Warden Service said.

Shink was riding on the all-terrain vehicle with his uncle, Eric Wetherell, 27, of Lewiston, who escaped serious injury.

Wetherell was arrested after the crash and was being held in the Androscoggin County Jail on an outstanding warrant for failing to show up for sentencing on a drunken driving charge, said Mark Latti, Warden Service spokesman.

A blood-alcohol test was taken after the accident but the results were not yet available, Latti said.

The accident was reported around 6 p.m. Friday in woods off Plains Road.
