Plum Creek knew what they were getting when they paid stumpage rates for all that land. It is hard to believe that they suddenly realized later that all they would need is a zone change and they would have valuable waterfront and “remote” real estate. We are not that naive.

Offering the same plan, time after time, is a transparent ploy, expecting that we will ultimately give up and tell them to go ahead. Their PR campaign fools no one.

The “offering” of a $35 million conservation easement is another tricky move. It is presented as a gift, but the fine print indicates that it is really only an offer to sell some of the land, presumably paid for by The Nature Conservancy or some other funders.

This whole deal is beyond fixing. It should be rejected outright and Plum Creek should be told to go back to the putative original intent of the purchase, namely, harvesting (sustainable, we insist) forest products only.
