HIGH SCHOOL REPORT

Bangor girls alumni game set for Aug. 17 Event will honor Thompson

Earlier this year, Bangor High girls soccer coach Larry Smith wanted to find some way to honor Danielle Thompson, a former Ram player and 2003 Bangor graduate who died Jan. 3 from bacterial meningitis during her senior year at the University of New Hampshire.

At the same time, former Bangor player Kristan Strout, a 2000 Bangor graduate was trying to organize an alumnae game for former Rams.

Eventually, the two events were folded into one, and the first Bangor Girls Soccer Alumnae Game, which will benefit the Danielle Marie Thompson Scholarship Fund, is now set for Friday, Aug. 17.

Thompson played four years of soccer, including one as a captain, under then-head coach Jeff Ingalls. Smith was a volunteer assistant at the time and is going into his third year as the Bangor head coach.

The game will start at 7 p.m. at the high school field and will be played as two 20-minute halves featuring the current Bangor girls varsity against the alumnae.

Pam Tweedie, a family friend of the Thompsons and whose son, J.R. Tweedie, graduated with Danielle Thompson, is also helping to coordinate the game after Smith asked Pam Tweedie this spring her thoughts about some way to remember Thompson.

So far, Tweedie said, there are more than 25 players signed up.

“Everything’s going really well so far,” said Tweedie, whose middle child, Jessica Tweedie, was a cheerleader with Thompson and is friends with Thompson’s sister Kristen.

The evening also includes a raffle and silent auction with prizes donated from local people and businesses. Prizes include jewelry, a one-night hotel stay, an autographed baseball, a tanning package, a year-long gym membership, 100 gallons of heating oil, and gift certificates.

Referees Adam Towne and Larry Seaney also donated their time for the game, Pam Tweedie said.

Concessions including hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, sausages, drinks and baked goods will be available starting at 5:30 p.m.

Admission to the game is free although donations to the scholarship fund will be accepted.

To make a donation, make checks payable to Danielle Marie Thompson Scholarship Fund, care of Pam Tweedie, 21 Fifteenth Street, Bangor, Maine, 04401. For more information call Tweedie at 947-7245.
