The head of the Maine Department of Conservation will visit a state park in Dover-Foxcroft today in part to help build public support for a bond referendum.

Conservation Commissioner Patrick McGowan will take a tour of Peaks-Kenny State Park and talk with park staff and visitors. The visit is one of several that McGowan and other senior DOC officials are making this summer and fall.

In addition to meeting with park staff and visitors, McGowan will use the visit to highlight the $7.5 million bond package that will be on the November ballot.

If approved, the bonds will be used to make much-needed infrastructure improvements to state parks, including Peaks-Kenny, as well as state historic sites.

Other items in the November bond package are $17 million for the Land for Maine’s Future program and $5 million for river-based community and economic development projects.

“It’s always encouraging for me to meet our visitors and talk with our staff members,” McGowan said in a statement. “Peaks-Kenny is one of the jewels of our state park system and will see some improvements if the bond question passes in November.”

Located on the shores of Sebec Lake about 6 miles from Dover-Foxcroft, Peaks-Kenny State Park features a campground, beach, picnic and day-use areas and hiking trails throughout the park’s 839 acres.

McGowan also plans to visit Camden Hills State Park as part of the tour next month.
