LINCOLNVILLE – The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department has identified the man who drowned at Lincolnville Beach Friday night as a guest worker from the Balkan country Moldova.

Dionis Rusu, 21, of Ciutulesti, Republic of Moldova, was found washed up on shore south of the Maine State Ferry Terminal at approximately 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Although an autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death, authorities said Monday they think he drowned.

“We’re pretty sure he drowned,” Lt. Bryant White said Monday. “There was no trauma on the body.”

Sheriff Scott Story said Rusu was a summer employee at the Mount Battie Motel, which is located a short distance from the beach. He said Rusu generally went for a swim each day and last was seen around 3 p.m. The body was discovered by a woman walking along the beach, he said.

“The motel owner said he was a real nice guy and a good worker,” Story said.

Story said Rusu was one of a number of guest workers from Eastern Europe who find jobs in the tourist industry up and down the coast each summer. Most are college students earning money for education.

Besides Story and White, sheriff’s department deputies Dale Brown and Glen Graef, state police detectives Scott Bryant and Chris Tremblay and Lincolnville Police Chief William Labombarde assisted at the scene where the body was found.
