Bangor Symphony Orchestra season to kick off Oct. 6

BANGOR – The 112th season of the Bangor Symphony is just weeks away. Tickets are already selling for the classical concerts and special events. In addition to the Sunday afternoon schedule, performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays in Peakes Auditorium, Bangor High School. With classical concerts, the “Spirit of Bangor” family holiday event and the Nor’easter String Quartet series, the symphony offers something for everyone.

The symphony’s 112th season begins with a special 50th anniversary tribute to Bill Miller.

A gala will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Bangor Civic Center. The tribute weekend continues at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Bangor Auditorium with the BSO’s opening concert featuring Rodgers and Hammerstein, Ravel and Tchaikovsky.

The Nov. 3 and 4 concerts at Peakes Auditorium feature works by Mozart, Ravel, Vanhal and Beethoven. Soloists are BSO Concertmaster Trond Saeverud, principal Wren Saunders and Stevi Caufield.

The BSO presents the Nor’easter String Quartet, an ensemble of the BSO, Nov. 6 and March 25 at the Bangor Opera House, home of Penobscot Theatre, with works by Haydn, Debussy, Borodin and more.

Dec. 1 and 2 continues with an old holiday tradition of the BSO combined with new traditions as it presents “Spirit of Bangor” at the Bangor Auditorium.

Feb. 2 and 3 continues the BSO’s classical series at Peakes Auditiorium with works by Elgar, Mozart and Dvorak. Returning soloist Alexander Fiterstein will perform Mozart.

The BSO performs Wagner, Lalo and Franck during the March 15 and 16 concerts at Peakes Auditorium with returning soloist Philippe Quint.

The concerts April 12 and 13 at Peakes Auditorium feature works by Elgar and Brahms and will highlight guest soloist Heather Thomas, 2007 BSO Maine High School Concerto Competition winner.

The orchestra will present “famous fifth finales” during the season’s finale concert May 11 at Bangor Auditorium. The famous fifth finales of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Schubert will be highlighted.

Season subscriptions are available for the classical series concerts. Single tickets also are available for the classical series and other special events.
