Mainiacs bike trek
During a three-day period from Aug. 18 to 20, the newly formed Maine Air National Guard cycling team will ride throughout Maine celebrating the 60th anniversary of the United States Air Force.
The three-day celebratory bike trek across Maine will originate at the 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor and conclude at Hadlock Field in Portland three days later.
With various stops planned along the way the cycling team, assisted by the Maine Air National Guard recruiting team, will explain the purpose and scope of responsibilities the Air Force has in the welfare of Maine citizens and their communities.
The Maine Air National Guard plays a vital part not only in the nation’s defense, but in the wellbeing of the state of Maine and its people.
With events planned throughout the country celebrating the creation of the United States Air Force on Sept. 18, 1947, leaders of the Maine Air National Guard thought it appropriate to celebrate the Air Force’s birthday as well.
The bike trek not only promotes health and fitness, a vital necessity for all service members from all branches of service, but is intended to educate Maine citizens about the Maine Air National Guard and its relationship to the U.S. Air Force.
The 18 cyclists hope to be encouraged by a local show of support as the team passes through Bangor, Hampden, Newburgh, South China and the surrounding area. Stops and events are planned at various communities throughout the 160-mile trek.
