Water main leak cuts supply on Buck Street

Water main leaks on both Wednesday and Thursday left lower Buck Street in Bangor without water.

A pipe broke on Wednesday within 50 feet of the intersection of Buck Street and Main Street, said Kathy Moriarty, general manager of the Bangor Water District. Then on Thursday, 30 feet or more from the original break, another leak was spotted and needed repair.

The Bangor Daily News, Bangor Auditorium and Civic Center and the Bass Park fountain were the only businesses or locations that lost water service for about four to five hours on Thursday, Moriarty said.

The pipes on the lower 1,000 feet of Buck Street, close to Main Street, are older than the upper section, she said.

“It is pretty coincidental that we had two [leaks] within a couple of days here,” she said on Thursday.

Employees of the state’s Department of Professional and Financial Regulation were sent home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday after a water pipe break near the agency’s central office on North Avenue in Gardiner.
