Locks of Love fundraiser to aid kids with hair loss

Anyone preparing for the upcoming school year or anyone who has long hair and is considering having it cut is asked to stop and think about what a wonderful difference your newly cut hair could make in the life of another.

Lorraine Colpitts, owner of Safe and Sound Youth Transportation in Brewer, will host a Locks of Love Fundraiser from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Sept. 15, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer.

Colpitts will have stylists to assist in cutting donors’ hair, and you will enjoy “a fantastic evening of entertainment” that will include prize drawings and “a lovely social buffet, complete with a chocolate fountain,” she wrote.

Colpitts’ goal is to be able to send at least 100 Locks of Love to the nonprofit organization based in Lake Worth, Fla.

She has support of the national organization, which, according to its Web site, “provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis.”

To participate, you need 10 inches of hair or longer. However, hair that is 6 to 10 inches will be accepted.

Colpitts explained that it “takes three (or more) 10-inch segments of banded hair, plus $3,500, to make one hairpiece that will be custom-fitted to each child that suffers from hair loss, or inability to grow hair due to illness or disease.”

She wrote, “We encourage those who cannot donate hair to donate what they can toward the cost of the processing.

“Hair that is cut prior to our event can be bagged and sent directly to Locks of Love by me” and all donors will be included in her Locks of Love count.

Here is a chance to learn more about what Valdine Atwood of Machias describes as an “often forgotten battle.”

The Machias Historical Society will remember the 1777 Siege at Machias by British armed forces at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Machias boat landing at the dike on U.S. Route 1, Atwood wrote.

“The story of the little-known battle, which occurred over a 2-day period,” Aug. 13-14, 1777, “will be recalled by members of the Hannah Weston Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution,” and the DAR chapter, of which Atwood is a member, will conduct a service of remembrance.

Nancy Herr e-mailed that the historic museum The Ruggles House will hold an appraisal fair from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 146 Main St., Columbia Falls.

Representatives of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries will offer professional appraisals for a fee of $5 per item or $20 for five items, she wrote.

“All proceeds will benefit the Ruggles House Society. Check your attics and find out what those treasures are worth!”

Herr added that “the house will be open for tours, as usual, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and she said to be sure to check out the museum’s gift shop and quilt raffle.

Michael Gleason of Bangor forwarded information that the Maine Military Historical Society will hold an open house from noon to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at the museum, which is located outside the main gate of the Maine National Guard headquarters at Camp Keyes on Winthrop Street in Augusta.

The site is adjacent to the Augusta airport terminal.

The event is intended to inform people about the organization, enable them to visit and learn about the museum. Volunteers will be available to assist you.

Refreshments will be served and membership applications will be available.

According to information I received, a recent benefit dinner for 50-year-old Thomas Doll of Bangor, a single parent who has been diagnosed with cancer, was a great success, and family and friends extend their sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to that event.

Those who were unable to participate in the event might appreciate knowing that a fund has been established to benefit Doll’s three minor children.

If you were unable to attend the dinner, but would like to help the family of this 1975 Bangor High School graduate who played baseball and football for the Rams, you can send donations to the EMMC Federal Credit Union, Attn: Thomas Doll Fund, 489 State St., Bangor 04401.
