Hawaii shows off power in 17-2 win U.S. West champs score 12 runs in fourth inning vs. Asia-Pacific squad

BANGOR – The Hilo, Hawaii All-Stars outscored their opponents 165-26 in tournament play leading up to the Senior League World Series.

The U.S. West champs showcased their powerful offense Sunday, pounding out 12 runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth en route to a 17-2 romp of Asia-Pacific representative Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in a Pool A matchup at Mansfield Stadium.

The game ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Hilo’s offense couldn’t muster much for the first few innings, coupled with the solid pitching of CMNI starter Marley Techur and what Hilo coach Kaha Wong believed was some jetlag.

“We flew 13 hours yesterday, we have to adjust to the six- hour difference from Hawaii,” he said.

After collecting just one hit in the first three innings, the Hawaiians displayed the power that carried them through the West Regionals.

Kolten Wong led off the inning with a walk, and after advancing to third on a wild pickoff attempt by Techur, Blake Amaral slammed a 3-2 fastball over the left-field fence to give Hilo a 2-1 lead.

More than a half an hour and 15 batters later, Jeremy Crivello lined a two-run double to deep center which gave Hawaii a 12-1 advantage.

Amaral, who said he was expecting a fastball in the full count, credited the solid work of pitchers Kendal Ushijima, Jordan Otis and Jared Shiroma as well as the bats.

“The offense will be [the key],” he said. “We have a really good pitching staff, we have a deep rotation.”

Wong added, “We ended up picking up the ball better, and ended up hitting like we’re supposed to hit.”

Other key hits in the 12-run fourth for the Hilo stars, in which they sent 16 men to the plate and scored six runs with two outs, were RBI singles by Keaka Pilayo and Ryan Fukunaga.

Hilo added five more in the top of the fifth, spearheaded by Kolten Wong’s RBI triple, an RBI single by Crivello and a two-run error.

Crivello finished the afternoon with RBIs while Keaka Pilayo went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Anthony Tenorio scored on a wild pitch in the home half of the third to give CMNI an early 1-0 edge.

Miscues and nerves combined to unravel coach Juan Tenorio’s club, which committed four errors.

“I believe that the boys [have] to take the butterflies out of the stomach,” Tenorio said. “I believe my boys are going to do better [Monday].

Ryan Ada showed off some power in the top of the fifth, hitting a solo homer over the 385-foot mark in left-center which nearly made the swimming pool behind the stadium.

Ada’s homer was CMNI’s only extra-base hit of the day.
