Hits kept coming for Canadians British Columbia gets 17 in win over Brewer

BANGOR – The Canadian champion in the 2006 Senior League World Series from Regina, Saskatchewan, not only lost its first game of pool play, it was no-hit.

Different year, different story for Canada, as the Whalley Little League of Surrey, British Columbia, amassed 17 hits during a 10-2 victory over Maine District 3 champion Brewer on Sunday in the opening game of the 2007 SLWS at Mansfield Stadium.

“I guess we just woke up and remembered how to swing the bats today,” said second baseman Dave Hadlow, who led the Canadian champions with a 4-for-4 day that included a double and three singles.

Carney Chamberlain had a double, two singles and two RBIs for the winners. Charley Clark, Adam Quan and Hayden MacDonald each singled twice.

“Before coming here we weren’t hitting too well in the Canadian tournament,” said pitcher Carson Nylund, who added a two-run single in the second inning. “To finish this game with 17 hits was pretty good.”

Nylund and two relievers limited Brewer – making its SLWS debut as the host team – to three hits, two by center fielder Billy Bissell.

Nylund, a righthander, allowed one earned run in five innings, throwing just 45 pitches.

“[Brewer was] swinging at a lot of first pitches and grounding out or popping up,” said Canadian manager Dennis Springenatic. “They were quite aggressive. I thought they maybe should have taken a few pitches and made our guys throw some more.”

One reason for that trend was Nylund’s accuracy – he threw just eight pitches out of the strike zone.

“My control was a little better than usual, for sure,’ said Nylund. “I was happy with that one.”

Chris Brien and MacDonald each worked a scoreless inning in support of Nylund.

An RBI single by Chamberlain off Brewer starter Eric White gave Canada a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Bissell opened the Brewer first by doubling to deep right-center. He went to third on a passed ball, and after a walk to Kyle O’Connell, scored the tying run on a groundout by White.

Dylan Fitzpatrick then hit a drive to deep center, but Quan raced back to make a diving catch that essentially ended Brewer’s threat.

“I think if that one ball had gotten over the center fielder’s head, we might have scored three or four that inning,” said Brewer manager Dave Perry. “[Quan] made a nice play on it.”

Surrey, a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia, took the lead for good in the second. Brien drew a leadoff walk and Hadlow singled before both runners advanced on a sacrifice by Curtis Davis. Nylund then grounded a single up the middle through the drawn-in Brewer infield to drive home both runners.

Brien and Hadlow hit back-to-back RBI singles in the third to stretch the lead to 5-1.

Brewer scored its final run in the bottom of the inning. Joey Cox beat out a chopper down the third-base line, then raced to third on an overthrow to first base. When Surrey tried to throw Cox out at third, another overthrow allowed him to score and cut Brewer’s deficit to 5-2.

Brock Greaves hit an RBI single off Brewer reliever Pat McEwen in the fourth, and a second run scored on one of three double plays turned by the Maine District 3 champs to make it 7-2.

“We haven’t played in 21/2 weeks, so I think they were itching to get out on the field but they were a little nervous,” said Perry of the Brewer team, which plays at 5 p.m. today against Asia-Pacific champion Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

“I think we’ll bounce back tomorrow.”
