SEARSPORT – Authorities have tentatively identified the foot discovered Sunday in a tide pool at Moose Point State Park as the remains of a Hancock County boy who either fell or jumped from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge earlier this year.

Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story said the foot was inside a sneaker and was found at approximately 3:45 p.m. by a family walking along the shore. The remains are believed to be from Harrison Damon, 17, of Orland. Damon was seen falling from the bridge at about 7 p.m. March 5.

“We contacted the family and got a preliminary identification through the sneaker and we believe it may be part of his remains,” Story said Monday. “They were taken to the state medical examiner in Augusta for a positive identification through DNA.”

Three witnesses said they saw Damon jump off the bridge on the Prospect side of the Penobscot River that snowy evening. His family believes he was disoriented that night and that his death was accidental.

One of the witnesses told authorities he saw a young male without a shirt lying down in the median between the lanes.

The man said he stopped his vehicle and watched the youth get up and walk toward the guardrail. He said he got within a few feet of the boy and told him not to jump, but the boy let go.

The Marine Patrol, U.S. Coast Guard and Bucksport Fire Department mounted a rescue operation and searched the river. Marine Patrol divers spent three days searching for Damon, but his body was never recovered.
