Friends and family of 33-year-old Maine native and current Colorado resident Todd Mitchell are holding a benefit yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 18, at 454 Garland St. in Bangor.

Gail Creath reports that Mitchell was diagnosed in July 2006 “with an extremely aggressive form of germ cell cancer, which is the same type of cancer that Lance Armstrong had,” although it is a different strain.

The son of Glenn and Judy Mitchell graduated from Brewer High School in 1992 and with a nursing degree from the University of Maine in 2000.

He worked several years at Eastern Maine Medical Center, and throughout the country as an operating room traveling nurse.

And although Mitchell had a stem cell transplant in May, the cancer has returned, Creath reports, and he has begun further chemotherapy treatments.

Proceeds from the sale will “help him with his living expenses and medical expenses” since he has been unable to work, she explained.

“Just follow the signs,” wrote Jackie Nicholson.

The $17 shore dinner “includes lobster, corn on the cob, homemade slaw and desserts, rolls, watermelon and beverages,” she added.

Pat Hodgkins reports proceeds from the event being organized by Nancy Kephart will be used for the club’s year-round community projects such as enabling area groups to use the Hancock Community Center, college scholarships, youth sailing and tennis programs, a high school student art show, and a children’s Santa fund.

Everyone is welcome to enjoy this wonderful Maine summer dining opportunity.
