Southwest shuts out Venezuela Mayo’s strong pitching lifts Texas to 2nd win

BANGOR – Team Jet Lag seems to have gotten its second wind, and then some.

The last team to arrive at the 2007 Senior League World Series is first in the pool B standings. The U.S. Southwest region champs from Tyler, Texas, posted a 9-0 victory over Latin American champ and defending Series champion Falcon, Venezuela, Tuesday at Mansfield Stadium.

Tyler is now 2-0 thanks in large part to one of the tourney’s strongest pitching performances.

Heath Mayo used excellent location and a fastball-curve-changeup pitch mix to limit a strong Venezuelan lineup to five hits over 6 2/3 innings.

“Coming in, I just hoped all my stuff was working, and I wanted to keep the fastball low,” Mayo said. “Usually, how my outing goes depends on if I can get my curveball breaking down in the zone and today everything was working really well.”

About the only thing that could stop Mayo Tuesday was the Senior League pitch limit of 95 pitches per game. His 95th pitch was hit through the left side for the second single of the day by Gustavo Prince with two outs in the seventh, and Mayo had to switch positions with center fielder Josh Holley. Holley then retired Falcon’s leadoff hitter on a foul popup with the bases loaded to end the game.

“I don’t care how hard you throw because sooner or later someone’s going to tee off on you if you don’t have good location and Heath had great location today,” said Tyler manager Bobby Rushing.

Mayo threw 67 strikes – 15 on the first pitch – to work ahead in the count on most batters. He allowed one walk while notching two strikeouts.

“That’s the kind of pitching we need,” said Tyler shortstop Tyler Clakley. “He went in, threw strikes, got ground balls and let his defense work.”

Clakley did some work at the plate, too. He and third baseman Brady Attaway each doubled and singled. Rushing also drove in two runs and scored one.

Texas scored once in the second via an error, two singles, and a sacrifice bunt. In the third, Clakley led off with a double, R.B. Bell walked, a bunt moved them both over, and two runs came across on a balk and then a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

“I’m going to make teams play us honestly and not let them play deep,” Rushing said about Tyler’s attacking offensive style. “I like to put things in motion and make things happen. I’m a fairly aggressive coach and I’m going to try and force the issue.”

After reliever Jose Gonzalez struck out the first two Texas hitters in the seventh, he left after 20 pitches to remain eligible to pitch Wednesday. Marcos Pina came on and Tyler greeted him with seven straight hits and six runs to put the game out of reach.

Falcon is now 1-1 in pool B competition.
