BANGOR – Gov. John Baldacci and the Cole Land Transportation Museum will honor Vietnam Veterans with a special day at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the museum at 405 Perry Road.
Hundreds of Vietnam veterans from across the state are expected to attend Maine Vietnam Veterans Day when the governor will hand out the Maine-made maple walking sticks with the red, yellow and green stickers on them.
More than 1,000 Maine Vietnam vets have received the walking sticks already, and they are invited to pick up commemorative red, white and blue stickers for their walking sticks at 1:30 p.m. that day.
Baldacci and Don Colson, author of “Quiet Courage,” profiling 89 veterans with Maine connections, will be on hand to sign copies of the book, which was published by the museum.
Proceeds from books purchased that day will go toward obtaining more walking sticks and helping to defray transportation costs for the Luxembourg Children’s Choir, which will perform at 3 p.m.
Those attending the special day are invited to bring lawn chairs. Some seating will be available on 6-foot granite benches the museum is donating to cemeteries and veterans memorials throughout Maine.
