HUDSON – Area senior citizens could be eligible for free farm-fresh produce.
About 1,300 farm shares that were made available for low-income seniors statewide through the Maine Senior FarmShare program have gone unused.
Some of those are in the district of state Rep. Bob Duchesne, D-Hudson, who said this week he is working to match eligible seniors with area farms.
Those who join the program now will receive $50 in a variety of produce each week for the remainder of the 10-week growing season. Some farms have the produce available for seniors to pick up at farmers markets while others will arrange for delivery.
Seniors must be 60 or older, Maine residents and live on their own with a yearly income of no more than $18,889 or have a combined yearly household income of no more than $25,327.
