ROCKLAND – After more than 20 years in nearby Thomaston, University College will open its fall semester Sept. 4 in its new home at Breakwater Marketplace on U.S. Route 1.

Beverly Bayer, coordinator of student services, said the newly renamed University College of Rockland is seeing increased enrollment this year.

“Our improved, professional space is beautiful and welcoming to all types of new students. It’s very exciting,” Bayer said.

The University of Maine System has been providing courses, degrees and certificates in the midcoast for more than 30 years. The programs were housed the past 21 years at the Thomaston Academy building.

URock, as it has been affectionately labeled, will offer 40 live on-site undergraduate courses this fall as well as more than 200 other courses through distance education technologies.

“We have refresher courses for those who are just getting started in college plus challenging upper-level classes for those further along in degree programs,” Bayer said in a news release.

He said many students who are not in degree programs take courses for professional development, such as in real estate, education and social services. He said students do not need to be in a degree program in order to take classes at the center.
