Tomato-riffic

Boffo for Beefsteak? Gaga for Green Zebra? Elated over Early Girl? Choose your favorite flavor during the Maine Tomato Tasting Week, which begins Aug. 24 and runs through Aug. 31 throughout the state. Some tastings will compare locally grown tomatoes to “imports,” while others will focus on heirloom varieties. Look for signs at your local farmers market.

Old home days

If you long for the good old days, head to Sunbury Village Retirement Residence from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for its Old Fashioned “Down Home” Day. The event is free and open to the public. Among the highlights is an old-fashioned barbecue, along with cotton candy, popcorn, a performance by the Step in Time cloggers and live music by Special Delivery. Sunbury Village is located at 922 Ohio St. in Bangor. For information, call 262-9600.

Scrumptious schedule

Sure, you’ve got class. And so does Pairings, the food and wine education center in Winterport. Actually, Pairings has classes – and the fall schedule for cooking lessons is now available online at www.PairingsInMaine.com/pages/calendar.html, in person at Pairings or the neighboring Winterport Winery, both on Route 1A in Winterport. New offerings include Asian Delights, Wine Snacks, Fun with Phyllo, Football Fan Food, and Make Ahead and Freeze Hors d’Oeuvres. For more information, call 223-0990.
