Jones holds off Johnson in 1st-round match

SAN FRANCISCO – Ricky Jones of Thomaston won his first-round match against Dustin Johnston at the 107th U.S. Amateur Championship at the Olympic Club Wednesday.

Jones defeated Johnson 1 up over 18 holes and will next take on George Zahringer, who beat Gary Wohlstenhome 1 up, in a second-round morning match today. Third-round matches will take place this afternoon with quarterfinals on Friday, semifinals on Saturday, and a 36-hole final on Sunday.

Jones was up two holes on Johnson heading into the 15th, but Johnson parred the 157-yard hole while Jones bogeyed. Jones held off Johnson as both had a par on 16, bogey on the par-4 17th, and a birdie on the par-4 18th.

Jones took his lead with back-to-back birdies on the par-4 eighth and ninth holes. After Johnson cut the lead to one on the 10th, Jones rebounded with a par to Johnson’s bogey on the 422-yard, par-4 10th hole.
