PRESQUE ISLE – The local man who won the $9.8 million Megabucks lottery drawing last week remains incognito.

Although the winner, who works in Presque Isle, apparently is known locally, he has not formally stepped forth to proclaim his newfound wealth. Some local residents reportedly know the man’s identity, but are keeping mum.

The owners of Ray’s Corner Variety have said they know who purchased the winning ticket, but indicated that he has asked them to keep his name a secret at least for the time being.

“We’re going to respect our customer’s wishes,” owner Raylene Shaw said Wednesday.

The state’s Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations also has not revealed the winner’s identity. The Lottery Web site notes only that there was a winner.

Calls to the bureau were directed to Director Dan Gwadowsky, who, according to the receptionist, is on vacation.

The winning ticket was one of five Easy Pick tickets the man purchased on Aug. 16, the day of the drawing. The winning numbers were 7-10-12-16-19-21. The jackpot, totaling $9,875,000, was the largest Tri-State Megabucks jackpot since 1993.
