Mass. boy’s body recovered from lake

MONMOUTH – Divers on Thursday recovered the body of a 15-year-old Massachusetts boy from Cobboseecontee Lake after the youth, an inexperienced swimmer, jumped in to cool off after football practice.

Authorities said the body was recovered near Camp Cobbossee, which had been rented by two Massachusetts high schools for a weeklong football camp.

Police in Easton, Mass., told the Lewiston Sun Journal that the victim’s name was Aaron Ortiz, who was entering his first year at Oliver Ames High School in North Easton.

Officials said the boy went into the water to cool off but did not have a life vest on. He went out about 50 yards into the lake when he went underwater.

Monmouth Police Chief Robert Annese said a lifeguard was on duty, but was unable to rescue him.

“It appears the young man was not a strong swimmer and went out without a life vest and attempted to swim too far,” Annese said. The youth apparently “got in distress and went under before the lifeguard could get to him.”

His body was recovered at 1:15 p.m. after a search by divers from the Maine Warden Service and Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department. The football camp has been canceled and the rest of the football players left camp Thursday.

Camp Cobbossee was being rented to the football teams, which have a total of about 150 players, through Lakeside Retreats, which rents to outside groups once the traditional summer season has ended.

Lakeside Retreats President Dan Zenkel released a statement calling the incident “a tragic accident” and saying, “We are all deeply saddened by the loss of this young football player.”

“We are doing everything we can to assist the authorities in their investigation,” Zenkel wrote, “and our thoughts are with the friends and family of this individual.”
