Two former student-athletes, one friend and supporter, and one team will comprise the University of New England Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2007.

Ruth Gagnon Shaw (Class of 1984), Jay Corey ’90, Andy Scontras, and the 1991 University of New England women’s volleyball team will be honored at UNE’s third Hall of Fame ceremony to be held Sept. 29.

Gagnon Shaw was a three-sport athlete at UNE during the early 1980s. A member of the volleyball, basketball and soccer teams, she had one of the finest basketball careers of any UNE player. Gagnon Shaw holds the program’s single-game records for points scored (40) and rebounds (29). The 1984 graduate completed her career with 1,333 points.

Corey was a leader on some of UNE’s most successful men’s basketball teams. The consummate point guard is the program’s career leader in assists (943) and steals (576). He also ended his career with 1,757 points.

Scontras, a well-known local businessman, is being inducted under the category “Friend and Special Contributor.” His support of UNE for more than 15 years has aided the athletics program.

The 1991 volleyball team was the first National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics team in that sport at UNE to advance to a national tournament. Led by head coach Karol L’Heureux, the squad posted a 32-7 record and was ranked in the top 20 nationally during the regular season.

The Army National Guard will host a tailgate party for all military personnel prior to kickoff, and a climbing wall will be set up. ROTC Color Guard will present the colors for the singing of the National Anthem.
