Aging agencies can help

Aging agencies can help

The editorial “Unneeded Advantage” (BDN, Aug. 21) outlined the reasons why funding for Medicare Advantage programs should be scaled back.

It is important to recognize that Medicare Advantage health insurance plans are very new to our area, however they have been utilized in the southern part of the state, and other states, for several years. But being new to eastern Maine, it is important to acknowledge that, as with any insurance product, there is always confusion and an expected adjustment period to fully understand the services that will be offered by the plan.

That is where your local Area Agency on Aging comes in. The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), a free service that helps people understand the ins and out of insurance including Medicare Advantage, is available through your Area Agency on Aging. This program helps people on Medicare make an informed decision about what insurance option works best for them.

All health insurance plans should be researched fully by the consumer to understand what services are offered and to ensure the best fit for the individual.

A simple call to your Area Agency on Aging can help clear up any confusion regarding Medicare Advantage or any other insurance plan.

To reach the nearest Area Agency on Aging, people are encouraged to call toll-free 877-353-3771. People on Medicare have a valuable resource in their Area Agency on Aging and do not have to tackle such matters alone.
