Perhaps you have ties to Island Falls.

Perhaps you don’t, but just love to cook and enjoy using cookbooks that have something special to offer.

If either is the case, Rebecca Drew, secretary of the Island Falls Historical Society, has “a treat in store for you,” she wrote.

Drew explained IFHS recently “published a cookbook that is much more than just recipes on a page.”

“Every page contains a recipe, a sketch done by local artists, and a short quote from contributors or a bit of historical information about the town,” Drew wrote, adding that “divider pages feature old photos” of buildings in that community.

“In addition, a section of the cookbook has exclusive recipes and facts from the Log Driver’s Cookout, a yearly event in Island Falls,” she continued.

That event, a community tradition since 1971, is “known far and wide for good food, great snow sledding and fun,” and “has been publicized worldwide through the years,” she wrote.

The cookbook is titled “Cooking Memories” and is available by sending $15 plus $2 for shipping to Island Falls Historical Society, P.O. Box 204, Island Falls 04747.

Copies may also be purchased at the Emerson Store, 16 Nina Sawyer Lane, Island Falls, or at the Katahdin Public Library, 20 Library St., Island Falls.

Drew added all proceeds will benefit the IF Historical Society.

Norma Milton e-mailed that Caribou Pet Rescue will conduct a Pet Adoption Fair-Returnable Bottle-Can Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at Cindy’s Sub Shop on Sweden Street in Caribou.

Milton hopes you all will “join in and enjoy our pets, and bring your empty bottles to help us out with our finances.”

“We are working very hard, as volunteers,” she wrote, “and spaying and neutering like crazy.”

“We are loaded to the top with cats, and we have dozens of healthy kittens,” she added.

Milton hopes that you will drop by “and think about adding one of these beautiful cats to your family.”

She also wants you to know that “we so appreciate everyone’s help,” and if you can’t be there that day you can send donations to Caribou Pet Rescue, P.O. Box 488, Caribou 04736.

The public is cordially invited to attend Rape Response Services’ 11th annual Fall Festival Auction and Awards Night beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Spectacular Event Center, 395 Griffin Road in Bangor.

Tickets are $15 each or two for $25, with a reserved table for eight just $80.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling RRS at 941-2980 or e-mailing rrsdir@raperesponseservices.org.

Information provided by Kim Roberts-Fer indicates the fundraiser helps kick off the fall season in this area and offers attendees “an outstanding array of beautiful items” on which to bid.

For example, up for auction is an original painting by Kristborg Whitney; a miniature sculpture by Forest Hart; and an autographed Stephen King book.

The auction, with Sue McKay wielding the gavel, also includes jewelry, furniture, overnight lodging and sports-related items.

Proceeds benefit RRS, which assists people in Penobscot and Piscataquis counties affected by sexual assault, and provides a toll-free hot line (800-310-0000) and other services.

Phillips-Strickland House executive director Nelson Durgin called this week to report eight openings remain for the limited field of 128 golfers in the 10th annual Phillips-Strickland House Charity Golf Tournament.

That benefit begins with a shotgun start at noon Monday, Sept. 10, at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono.

Durgin said the tournament offers “wonderful prizes, mulligans, a Ladies Gross Division, monetary prizes for gross and net, and a 2007 Toyota Tundra for a hole-in-one” which, he added, “I would love to see somebody win.”

The event concludes with a chicken barbecue and awarding of prizes.

Registration information can be obtained by calling PSH administrative assistant Sharon Nickerson at 941-2820.

Proceeds from the event benefit the residents of PSH, which is the only nonprofit, elderly residential facility in our area.

Openings are available for the Center for Grieving Children’s fifth annual golf tournament, Swing “Fore” The Center, beginning with a noontime shotgun start Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Poland Spring Country Club.

The tournament raises funds for the Portland-based organization that offers support to grieving children, teens and families along with crisis support in the community through peer support, outreach and education.
