Bates, Keezer, Dwyer lead Orono Red Riots by MCI Bucksport, Mattanawcook, Foxcroft open with wins

PITTSFIELD – Colin Bates ran for three touchdowns and Kash Keezer threw a pair of touchdown passes to Seth Dwyer as the Orono Red Riots opened the high school football season with a 44-19 victory over the Maine Central Institute Huskies Friday night.

Bates carried gained 147 yards on 13 carries and scored on runs of 2, 32 and 21 yards.

Keezer, who completed seven of nine passes for 179 yards, threw scoring strikes of 38 and 51 yards to Dwyer.

Ben Perry scored on a seven-yard run for the Riots, who used a 23-point third quarter to break the game open.

Dwyer caught four passes for 125 yards.

Nick Miller ran for all three MCI touchdowns and carried the ball 32 times for 182 yards.

Bucksport 48, Dexter 0

At Bucksport, junior Nate Warren had six carries for 123 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Bucksport to a 48-0 victory over Dexter.

Bobby Alvarado had seven carries for 63 yards and scored a touchdown for the Golden Bucks and Derek Fish had four carries for 33 yards with a touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Alex Giosia scored the final touchdown on a 21-yard run. Bill Comtois converted three extra-point kicks and Ray Wood added two more.

Defensive lineman Andrew Wescott had an interception for Bucksport.

Mattanawcook 22, Rockland 12

At Lincoln, Brady Vose paced a balanced rushing attack with 106 yards on 18 carries and a nine-yard touchdown run as Mattanawcook Academy held off Rockland in its opener.

The Lynx shut down Rockland’s vaunted offensive attack. Sophomore defensive end Greg Hand racked up nine tackles, 21/2 sacks, recovered a fumble and batted down three passes in his first varsity start.

Derek Libbey contributed a one-yard TD run in the first quarter and finished with 50 yards on 12 carries and added 10 tackles, an interception and blocked field goal on defense.

Josh Murchison had 70 yards on 11 carries and Jake Smith 55 yards on 10 rushes for the winners.

Dylan Meklin completed 11 of 27 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers. Andrew Weiss left the game with a shoulder injury.

Skowhegan 54, Brewer 0

At Skowhegan, Greg Saydjari rushed for 161 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns to lift Skowhegan over Brewer.

Bill Clark had 18 carries on 131 yards and scored two touchdowns for Skowhegan. Zack Whiting added 113 yards on 12 carries with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion rush.

Mike Roy scored on a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter and also ran in the two-point conversion. Colby Wood added a 14-yard touchdown run.

Coby Hutchins completed three of 10 passes for 57 yards for Brewer.

Foxcroft 13, John Bapst 12

At Dover-Foxcroft, Jamie Nason scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter and also completed five of eight passes for 83 yards to lead Foxcroft Academy to a narrow victory over John Bapst of Bangor.

Ian Champeon added a five-yard TD run with 1:11 left in the third quarter for Foxcroft.

Kyle Gallant connected 11 of 18 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns to pace John Bapst.

Nick Smith caught a 44-yard pass in the third quarter and Aaron Healey grabbed a nine-yard pass in the fourth.

Jarod Rideout had 15 carries for 55 yards for the Ponies and Ben Provost also had 55 yards on 13 rushes.

Derek Smith had four receptions for 90 yards for the Crusaders and Nick Smith had two catches for 56 yards.

Despite the loss, John Bapst outgained Foxcroft 266-255 in total yards.
