GRAY – Two men facing attempted murder and other charges after allegedly trying to throw another man out a second-story window are to make initial court appearances as early as Tuesday.
Jeffrey A. Fowler, 49, and Dale L. Morton, 44, both of Bridgton, remained in Cumberland County Jail on Monday in lieu of bail. Each man faces charges of attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault, burglary, robbery, felony theft, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of illegal drugs, officials said.
Cumberland County Sheriff Mark Dion said the two men reportedly were trying to collect an outstanding debt from the victim, 28-year-old Michael Rehmert.
After receiving a report of a domestic disturbance, sheriff’s deputies were called to a duplex apartment on Mayo Road early Sunday.
Police said two men, one of them armed with a handgun, had broken into the apartment. The intruders held a gun to Rehmert’s temple, pistol-whipped him until he was unconscious and then tried to throw him out a second-story window. Rehmert was treated for head injuries.
Another man, a woman and two children, ages 3 years and 4 months, fled the apartment and were not harmed, police said. Police said Rehmert knew his alleged attackers.
Dion said Rehmert had borrowed a “significant” sum of money to start a tattoo business, and never repaid the loan. Investigators did not yet know who financed the loan, but did not believe Fowler and Morton had been hired to collect the debt.
“If this was a loan-collection strategy, it failed miserably,” Dion said.
The two suspects were leaving the crime scene when police arrived. They were arrested on Route 100 in Gray.
Morton and Fowler were held in lieu of $500,000 single surety or $250,000 cash bail.
