All shook up

Fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches might not be on the menu, but sweet treats – and a performance by Bruce Nye the Elvis Guy – will be at this year’s Dessert with Elvis. The event, which features a dessert buffet and auctions, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Spectacular Event Center in Bangor. Admission costs $10 and all proceeds benefit Grace United Methodist Church’s ministry and outreach programs. Advance tickets are available at Patrick’s Hallmark at the Broadway Shopping Center, The Grasshopper Shop, Rebecca’s and Grace Church, all in Bangor. For information, call 942-8320.

Chili’s for a cure

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has teamed up with Chili’s Grill & Bar to raise funds for cancer research. Through Sept. 30, diners who make a donation to St. Jude will receive a Create-A-Pepper coloring sheet, which will be displayed in the restaurant. Or, they can purchase Create-A-Pepper gift cards, dog tags and T-shirts, a portion of which will be donated to St. Jude. On Monday, Sept. 24, 100 percent of the restaurant’s profits will be donated to St. Jude. Last year’s campaign raised $5.2 million to benefit kids with cancer. Around the world

Starting this month, Valerie Jean’s, An American Bistro will offer guests a passport to international cuisine. The Milo restaurant will serve three- or four-course Taste of the World Dinners each Wednesday for $30 per person. September’s menu will highlight Greek specialties, including spanakopita (spinach, feta and mint wrapped in phyllo); chicken or lamb souvlakia with orzo and olive salad, saut?ed eggplant and tzatziki sauce; and baklava (phyllo dough layered with almonds and walnuts, then soaked in a honey glaze). In addition, the restaurant serves a $9.95 Italian dinner special on Sundays. Reservations are recommended; call 943-7470 for details.
