AUGUSTA – Seats are still available at Old Fort Western for a coach tour of the Benedict Arnold trail on Sept. 22.
Arnold and 1,100 soldiers trekked up the Kennebec River in 1775, crossed the height of land, and traversed Lac Megantic to the Chaudiere River on their way to Quebec to fight the British.
Arnold stopped at Fort Western between Sept. 23 and Sept. 29, 1775, to regroup and organize his forces before setting off to Canada along what now is known as the Kennebec-Chaudiere Corridor.
The tour will follow Route 27 from Augusta to Cathedral Pines, Ledge Falls, Camp Disaster and Natanis Point, cross into Canada at Coburn Gore, stop at Lac Megantic for lunch, drive along the Chaudiere River, and return to Augusta through St. Georges, Jackman and Skowhegan. Lunch is included in the tour price. A morning snack stop and evening supper are pay-as-you-go.
Departure time for the 12-hour tour is 7:30 a.m. from Old Fort Western.
The cost of the trip is $60 per person ($50 for members of Old Fort Western and the Arnold Expedition Historical Society). Registration and payment deadline is 4 p.m. Sept. 18. Trip fees are nonrefundable.
