AUGUSTA – Democrat Tom Allen’s Senate campaign said Friday a $1,000 contribution from disgraced Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu had been returned.

Allen campaign spokeswoman Carol Andrews said the money was returned “as soon as the story broke” last week.

Allen, a sixth-term U.S. representative challenging Republican incumbent Susan Collins’ bid for a third Senate term, received the donation from Hsu on March 15.

On Friday, Hsu was in custody at a Colorado hospital, listed in fair condition.

FBI agents took Hsu into custody Thursday night at the hospital in Grand Junction. His arrest came days after he failed to show up for a court appearance related to a felony theft conviction.

Hsu had been scheduled to appear in a California court Wednesday. He was going to ask a judge to cut the bail he posted last week when he turned himself in after spending 15 years on the loose from a felony theft conviction.

Instead, Hsu failed to show up and a judge issued a new arrest warrant for him.

Hsu’s criminal past has roiled top Democratic campaigns.
