OAKLAND – A reproduction of Fenway Park has taken shape in here, thanks to a local philanthropist and community leader who owns a minority share of the Boston Red Sox.
The Harold Alfond Fenway Park, with an expected seating capacity of 500, will be used primarily by youth baseball leagues.
Highlighting the dedication ceremony Sunday was a scheduled appearance by Cal Ripken Jr., the Hall of Fame shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles, to catch the first pitch tossed by Alfond.
The mini-Fenway, two-thirds the size of the original, includes a 20-foot-tall Green Monster in left field and a scoreboard similar to the one used by the Red Sox.
Alfond, the founder of Dexter Shoe, has funded arenas, stadiums and other sports facilities across Maine.
