‘End the War’ rally to be held in Bangor

Citing the mounting financial and human costs of war, peace organizations are sponsoring a rally and ceremony, “End the War. Build the Peace.” at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at Paul Bunyan Park in Bangor. The rally and ceremony will be held along with demonstrations in Washington, D.C., and around the country calling for an end to funding the war in Iraq.

After a short rally with speakers and music there will be a ceremony to mourn the Iraq war dead and resources lost to the Iraq war.

Signs and posters will be available and participants are invited to bring what they would like to share as alternatives to war. Area choirs will sing together to affirm ongoing commitment to peace and a vision for a sustainable future. Afterward, people will line Main Street with their signs in a “Chain of Concern.”

Co-sponsors include Military Families Speak Out, Bangor Chapter of Veterans for Peace, From Every Village Green, Pax Christi, Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine, Peace & Justice Center of Northern Maine (Aroostook County), Work for Peace (Washington County), Midcoast Peace & Justice, Peace & Justice Group of Waldo County, St. Francis Community, Radio Free Maine, Maine Peace Action Committee, Island Peace & Justice, Peninsula Peace & Justice, Peace Action Maine.
