ORONO – Garth Snow, Andy Bedard and Mike Flynn will be among the newest members of the University of Maine Sports Hall of Fame when the Class of 2007 is inducted on Oct. 14.
Snow, a former men’s ice hockey standout goalie; Bedard, an ex-Black Bear men’s basketball point guard; and Flynn, a former Maine offensive lineman, will join Ed Barrows (football), Kevin Buckley (baseball), Vanessa Ray-McGowan (cross country and track) and George Wood (equipment manager) in this year’s Hall of Fame class. Barrows will be inducted posthumously.
The ceremony will accompany Homecoming activities with a banquet set for Oct. 14 at the Black Bear Inn at noon. The inductees will also be honored at halftime of the football game between Maine and William & Mary on Oct. 13.
Barrows captained the Bears to a 3-2-2 record in 1941, his senior year. Following his college career he was offered a contract with the Washington Redskins, but instead enlisted in the U.S. Army and was killed in action on Aug. 5, 1944, while leading a platoon in France.
A native of Rumford, Bedard led the Bears to a school-record 24 wins in the 1999-00 season. He is the Maine record holder for career and single-season assists. He served as an assistant coach for two years and was elected to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Buckley, who holds the Bears’ record for highest batting average in NCAA tournament play (.526), was named the MVP of the NCAA Regional and was named to the All-America team in 1981. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers and played in five major league games in his professional career.
Flynn captained UMaine to a 7-4 record in 1996, the first time the Bears had a winning record since 1992. He was signed by the Baltimore Ravens after his career and has started for the last seven seasons, including 2000 when the Ravens won the Super Bowl.
McGowan-Ray holds three individual and two relay track records as a middle distance specialist. She won 800-meter conference titles in both the indoor (1998) and outdoor seasons (2001).
Snow, a goaltender on Maine’s 1993 NCAA title team, held nine records and a share of two more when he graduated in 1993. He played on the U.S. team in the 1994 Olympics and following his Maine career played in 368 NHL games. He is currently the general manager of the New York Islanders.
Wood was an equipment manager at Maine from 1947 to 1990.
Tickets for the banquet cost $30 per person and can be purchased through the athletic ticket office at 207-581-BEAR. Tickets will be sold through Oct. 5.
Maine baseball has staff changes
Two UMaine baseball assistant coaches will get new titles and the Black Bears have added a coach, head coach Steve Trimper announced Tuesday.
Jared Holowaty has been promoted to full-time assistant, while former Maine standout Aaron Izaryk will serve as the pitching coach and Mark Michaud has come on board as a volunteer assistant.
Holowaty, who is in his third year on the Bears staff, is the recruiting coordinator and assists with the infielders and hitting.
Izaryk, who was a graduate assistant coach the past two years after a four-year playing career with the Black Bears, will serve as a recruiter in addition to his duties as pitching coach.
Michaud, who was an assistant coach at Siena the past two years, will assist with the Maine pitchers and defense and help coordinate the UMaine baseball camp.
