Refrigerator redo

If your refrigerator resembles a science experiment – or a vending machine – this might be the giveaway for you. The National Dairy Council is holding the Ultimate Fridge Makeover contest, in which winners will receive a new stainless steel General Electric refrigerator stocked with healthful foods, along with a consultation with a well-known culinary and nutrition expert. To enter, visit www.3aday.org, submit a 50-word essay explaining why you deserve the award, and upload a photo of your unhealthful, disorganized fridge. Deadline is Sept. 29.

Makin’ whoopie (pies)

Karen Haase and Carol Ford of Cranberry Island Kitchen will make their gourmet whoopie pies on Thursday’s “Martha Stewart Show.” Shortly after Stewart sampled their wares this summer in Northeast Harbor, a producer from her program invited the Cumberland-based bakers to appear. Their signature Maine desserts are inspired by time they’ve spent on Little Cranberry Island, where Ford spends summers. The segment is scheduled during the 10 a.m. program, which airs locally on ABC 7.
