BANGOR – Maine Discovery Museum has received a special honor, the Above and Beyond Award, from Penquis Community Action Program, in recognition of the museum’s support of Discovery Day for pregnant and parenting teen mothers, a program which recently celebrated its third anniversary. Past recipients of the award are Bangor Savings Bank and Mike and Mike of Clear Channel Radio.
Discovery Day is a partnership with Penquis CAP’s Parents Are Teachers Too program and a collaboration with several public and private nonprofit groups who meet throughout the year to plan and present the daylong program.
In addition to hosting the collaborative’s meetings and Discovery Day itself, the museum offers free memberships to participating teen parents and is an active member of the planning sessions.
Museum director of education Trudi Plummer works with program planners to offer craft projects that Discovery Day participants can easily and inexpensively repeat at home with their children, and MDM staff help coordinate follow-up play dates for participants and their children at the museum.
Discovery Day and the dedicated work and contributions of many organizations and local businesses that make it possible demonstrate the truth of the adage that “it takes a village to raise a child.”
“I’m very proud to accept the Above and Beyond Award on behalf of the staff and board of directors of the Maine Discovery Museum,” said Andrea Stark, executive director.
