The John B. Curtis Free Public Library in Bradford completed another successful Summer Reading Program. The 13-week program was made possible by grants from the Rose and Samuel Rudman Trust and the Maine Nutrition Network. These grants are very important to small town libraries where needs are big and funding is small.

“We had a great time this summer,” said Brenda Mowdy, librarian. “We started out with about 12 preschoolers and ended up with about 40 kids once school got out and the bus starting picking them up.”

This year’s theme was “On the Road Around Maine.” The kids “traveled” to various parts of the state, marking their progress on a map and focusing on Maine-made foods and industry. They sampled blueberries, strawberries, local produce and, of course, Gifford’s Ice Cream. They even made their own trail mix.

Books were read about their “trips” and activities were completed that related to the places they went. The program ended with a party and goody bags for each participant, including a book, toy, snack and a library produced coloring book.

The library building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is open 5-7 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. To learn more about the library and its programs, call Mowdy at 327-2111.
